Climate Research
The Trond Mohn Foundation wishes to contribute to increase the knowledge about climate, the causes of climate change and the development of people’s opinions and attitudes to this knowledge. TMS has already contributed to this theme for several years, for example climate-related TMS Starting Grants (see below) and to DIGSSCORE at the University of Bergen.
The newest initiative is the establishment of Bjerknes Climate Prediction Unit, in collaboration with the University of Bergen and the Bjerknes center.
Bjerknes Climate Prediction Unit aims to increase the precision of climate predictions to a level where this can be of benefit to society. The unit will focus on climate predictions for the Atlantic Ocean to the Arctic and surrounding land areas. The time span for such predictions will be from a season (3 months) to a 10-year period. In particular, the program aims at notifying marine areas that are important for fisheries and shipping, as well as conditions relevant to power generation, the insurance industry and society in general.
Bjerknes Climate Prediction Unit aims to become world leading in this field.
