Elisabeth Stephansen - the first Norwegian woman with a doctorate in mathematics - is honored with her own lecture series

Mary Ann Elizabeth Stephansen (born March 10, 1872 in Bergen, dead February 23 1961 in Espeland) was a Norwegian mathematician, the first Norwegian woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics. The joint project of the Tromsø research foundation and the Trond Mohn research foundation’s mathematics investment (PureMath) has established a lecture series called the Elisabeth Stephansen lecture to honor Stephansen and highlight outstanding female mathematicians.

The lecture series was instituted in connection with the national meeting of mathematicians in Tromsø 2022. The first speaker was Eugenia Malinnikova, professor at Stanford University and NTNU.
