Erlend Grong

Erlend Grong is a student of University of Bergen, where he completed his Ph.D. in mathematical analysis, after spending the final part of his doctoral studies at the research institute Mittag-Leffler in Stockholm. He then continued to the University of Luxembourg, where he worked as a  researcher with the group in probability theory. He recently returned to Bergen after a post-doc at Université Paris-Saclay cofinanced by the Norwegian Research Council and the EU’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND program.

In his research, Erlend searches for hidden structures in complicated equations using geometry and probability theory. He is also interested in how the information detectable by such methods can be computed numerically in the most accurate and efficient way possible. He has a special focus on the topic of sub-Riemannian geometry which seeks to understand shapes hidden in equations where the outcome of many things are determined by only a few underlying factors. Such equations has applications in robotics, finance and interpretation of data from medical imaging.
