Asbjørn Grønstad is professor of Visual Culture at the Department of information science and media studies and founding director of the Nomadikon Center for Visual Culture at the University of Bergen. Between 2008 and 2013 he was Research Director for the New Ecologies of the Image project, funded by the foundation. In 2007 he became the first full professor in the field of Visual Culture in Norway by accepting a post at the University of Stavanger. He is also founding editor (with Øyvind Vågnes) of the peer-reviewed journal Ekphrasis: Nordic Journal of Visual Culture. He is dr. art. in English/American Studies from the University of Bergen (2003) and he was the recipient of a postdoctoral grant from the Norwegian Research Council (2004-2007) for a project on transgressive art cinema.

He has been a visiting professor to the University of California-Berkeley (2006-2007; 2011 & 2013) and to the University of Amsterdam (2005; 2013). He has also been a Fulbright grantee twice (1998-1999 & 2017-2018). Grønstad has edited six anthologies and authored numerous articles as well as the monographs Transfigurations: Violence, Death and Masculinity in American Cinema (Amsterdam University Press, 2008), Screening the Unwatchable: Spaces of Negation in Post-Millennial Art Cinema (Palgrave, 2012), and Film and the Ethical Imagination (Palgrave, 2016).
