Quantum UiB

Quantum technology has the potential to bring about unprecedented breakthroughs in fields such as health, navigation, security, and energy. The Norwegian government has identified quantum technology as a strategically important area for Norway. Through Quantum UiB the University of Bergen (UiB) is taking a leading role in the development of new technology that will shape society in the decades to come. The goal is to advance groundbreaking research, develop new methods, and contribute to innovation in close collaboration with industry and international partners.

At UiB, researchers in physics, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, geosciences, and medicine will work together, and the center will also draw on the expertise of clinical departments at Haukeland University Hospital, actors in defense and security, Norwegian industry and business, as well as leading international research communities.

A key goal for the center is to contribute to the early detection of cancer through quantum sensing. Researchers at UiB are developing quantum-based sensors capable of detecting minute amounts of biomolecules in the blood and identifying cancer long before symptoms appear.

Another priority area is safe navigation without the use of GPS. GPS signals can be disrupted or jammed, and quantum-based navigation can improve solutions for aviation, shipping, and underwater operations—which is particularly important for a maritime nation like Norway. The center will also work on improving planning and management in the fields of shipping, transportation, and energy systems. Digital security is central to all these applications, and the center will place significant emphasis on post-quantum cryptography and quantum communication.

Professor Pinar Heggernes (Department of Informatics) will lead the center together with Deputy Director Konrad Tywoniuk (Department of Physics and Technology). In addition to its research activities, UiB is also actively training students and professionals: A new master’s program in quantum technology has been established, and UiB is planning to develop continuing education and professional development programs, including short courses for working professionals.
