A boost for trustworthy artificial intelligence research at UiB

Artificial intelligence (AI) has gradually become a natural part of our work, be it in research, education or other sectors. A general challenge related to the currently available AI systems is reliability and trustworthiness. There is for example a lack of scientific definitions and clear criteria for values such as justice, responsibility, security, privacy, and other important ethical aspects, as well as unresolved legal issues.

To meet these challenges and strengthen high-quality AI research at UiB, the Trond Mohn Foundation and the University of Bergen (UiB) have jointly developed the Trustworthy AI research program.

The program launched a call for proposals in the autumn of 2022 can now present the three winning projects:

  • AI and Education: Layers of Trust (EduTrust AI), project leader Professor Barbara Wasson, SLATE/Faculty of Psychology
  • Algorithmic Foundations of Trustworthy AI, project leader Professor Fedor V. Fomin, Department of Informatics
  • TRUSTworthy AI models to predict progression to complications in patients with Diabetes (TRUST-AI4D), project leader Professor Valeriya Lyssenko, Department of Clinical Science

– We are delighted that such strong and diverse research environments have responded well to the challenge of collaborating to solve very current issues. We are confident that the  trustworthy AI projects will strengthen UiB and Bergen in a field of high societal importance. On behalf of the foundation, I would like to thank UiB for the good cooperation in the development phase and wish you the best of luck with the projects that we look forward to following in the next years, says Anne Marie Haga, constituted CEO at TMS.
