Mikko Heino

Professor Mikko Heino is leader of the “Evolutionary Ecology” research group at the Department of Biology, University of Bergen. His main interests are in population and evolutionary ecology, trying to understand how organisms adapt to their environments. Much of his work is related to how fishing can drive evolutionary change in exploited populations. He obtained his master (1993) and doctoral degrees (1998) from the University of Helsinki. After two years as Finnish Academy postdoctoral fellow, he moved to the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen in 2001, where he was first senior scientist and then principal scientist working with marine fish stocks. In 2007 he started a new research group “Evolutionary Fisheries Ecology” at the University of Bergen with help of BFS grant.

He holds an adjunct position at the Institute of Marine Research and is guest researcher at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria. He spent the academic year 2016/2017 as guest professor at the Institute of Oceanography, National Taiwan University, Taiwan
